I am an Atheist. That is to say I do not believe in heaven or hell as defined by organized religions. I believe heaven and hell as we understand them are human constructs. Surely there is no god that would send his/her children to a place like hell. As a parent, if I terrified my children with real threats of sending them to a place of perpetual burning, pain and suffering, I would not be considered a good parent. In fact, I might well end up in jail or a mental institution. This is not to say that I am not spiritual in a cosmic sense. The purpose of the universe is to create and evolve intelligence. Every thought and emotion a human thinks or feels generates minute electrical activity in the brain. This even applies to an embryo as its brain develops. We are able to measure electrical activity in the brain, although not yet in precise detail. The laws of physics tell us that energy and matter are interchangeable and that they cannot be created or destroyed outside of Einstein's equation E=MC2. Thus, this electrical activity escapes into the universe around us and is never destroyed. It might be absorbed and converted to heat or otherwise be dispersed in the universe, but the energy is never destroyed. I like to conclude that all of my thoughts over my entire life have contributed to an unimaginably complex mix of energy that surrounds us all. A mix of all the mental energy produced by all of humanity (and indeed any other biological organism), living or dead, exists in the universe. My personal thoughts and emotions are my contribution to the universe and will exist as long as the universe exists. Likewise, those atoms which make up my physical body can never be destroyed - transformed into different molecules or broken down to basic elements but never destroyed. Thus, when I am buried, my atoms will eventually enter back into the biological life stream. Those atoms will exist forever or as long as the universe exists. This is my heaven. This holds true, no matter how the body is disposed of, even with cremation. Cremation speeds up the breakdown of complex molecules into basic atoms including a lot of steam which is vented to the atmosphere, however even in this case, the basic building blocks of life are not destroyed. I like to think that the more positive, loving and intellectual thoughts that people have throughout their lives, the more positive the overall mix of energy will be in the universe. Think positive. Experience emotions to their fullest. Living a positive loving life filled with curiosity and learning is your contribution to the universe.
