About
Julian Sale, joined DuPont in 1967 having graduated with first class honours in mechanical engineering from the University of Waterloo. He started in the polyethylene business at the research and technical labs in Kingston and from there went on to various sales, marketing, and management roles in Montreal, Toronto, and Mississauga.
In 1996, DuPont sold its medical imaging business, which was incorporated as a new business called Sterling Diagnostic Imaging Inc with Julian as Managing Director.
After 3 successful years as Sterling Diagnostic Imaging, they were purchased by Agfa Inc (one of the 3 major imaging companies in the world, similar in size to Kodak and Fuji). Julian was appointed Vice President Medical Imaging at Agfa Inc in Canada.
Julian retired from Agfa in 2002. Since his wife, Maggie, is originally from England and they love traveling there, they bought a home in a small Cumbrian village called Kirkby Lonsdale in the northwest of England ideally situated between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. They usually spent 4 to 5 months a year there. After 14 lovely years at Honeysuckle Cottage, they finally decided to sell in the spring of 2015 in order to focus more on other travels.
A major hobby Maggie and Julian both share is photography, which is a great hobby to have when you also love traveling. Although not a full-time business, they have been successful with photographic exhibitions, presentations, print sales, and publications.
Julian's other hobby is designing websites, which he has done for their own photographic websites, his camera club, other club members, businesses, and other non-profit organizations. Also, since retirement, he has volunteered as Vice President and board member at DAREarts Foundation Inc., a charitable organization dedicated to empowering at-risk children through learning and experiences in all the arts.
Julian and Maggie are keen outdoors people with activities ranging from hiking mountains in England to wilderness canoeing on Georgian Bay in Canada. In 2010, he started bicycling and has been a keen cyclist ever since.
In 2009, they moved from Toronto to Guelph where Julian, in keeping with his belief in life long learning, has been on the board of Third Age Learning Guelph (TALG) in a variety of positions including Webmaster and Chair. He's also actively involved with a similar organizations called Summer Lectures Club and the Royal City Men's Club. He volunteers at Third Age Network (TAN) where he has contributed to the visioning process and other projects.
With 3 grandchildren close by in Waterloo, they are enjoying another rewarding part of retirement.
