Well, this is a big topic. But I believe one with a short and simple answer.
The purpose of the universe is to create and evolve "intelligence". And by intelligence, I do not mean our simple and very narrow definition of IQ. It includes moral and ethical behaviours, an understanding of the connectedness of everything in the universe, appreciation of creative endeavours, creating civil societies, developing love and respect for each other and everything in the universe, and much more. As we observe the world around us and evidence of its evolutionary history, we see that all living things are evolving increasingly sophisticated ways of connecting to and interacting with everything in their environment. If it ends in catastrophic failure in any area, life and its evolution simply starts over. In time, it creates something even more sophisticated. This applies not only to our own terrestrial world, but the entire universe. As humans, we are creating an increasingly "technological" world, but we are lagging behind in terms of creating a more civilized world. Part of the technological revolution currently being created by humans is the development of "artificial intelligence". It is now possible to visualize within our lifetime the potential of robots becoming sentient beings with some capabilities vastly superior to our own. If super intelligent robots replace human beings in our world and the universe, then we would have fulfilled our role in the purpose of the universe. It is possible that the boundary between such sentient robots and humans will blur, and hopefully human beings, in one form or another, can continue to play a role in the purpose of the universe. Individuals may say that there is nothing they can do as an individual to contribute to this purpose. Actually, you can. Simply focus on applying one or more of the items in the first paragraph into your daily life. Think about other things that could contribute to a more intelligent world and apply them in your life in some small way every day. Try to learn something, share your knowledge, share your creativity every day. By learning something new, that does not mean passively listening to the news. It means thinking about something new (information, creativity, interactions with others) and how you might integrate it into your life and/or the life of others. It need only take minutes a day. You can make a difference in your life, the life of others, and contribute to your own purpose in life.
